This blue-green beryl has an ancient connection with the oceans and seas. The name “Aquamarine” is derived from the Latin word for seawater (aqua marina, “water of the sea”). This is a stone of the sea and a stone of the mystic.
The Greek and Roman myths of mermaids said Aquamarine came from their treasure chests deep in their watery realms. Historically, seafarers and merchants wore aquamarine for protection and for prosperous journeys.
The Sumerians, Egyptians and Hebrews held the stone as a symbol of happiness and everlasting youth. Beads of Aquamarines have been found in ancient Egyptian mummy pits.
